God,
at least in western Christian culture, is usually
pictured as a celestial being that looks like us, has a
range of emotions and, if sufficiently supplicated,
intervenes in our daily affairs. Zen, a Japanese
sect of Mahayana Buddhism that aims at enlightenment by
direct intuition through meditation, is an experiential
practice. The Zen of God is a journey to
transition God from some external, narrowly defined
object into a broadly experienced concept that will
allow us to see the divine in everyone we meet. The
object is not to confine God with a “new” definition but
rather to share your experiences of the holy so that
others may meditate on them and experience the holy in a
new way.
In this way, we might all become the Zen of God.
